CTH Y Wins Top Projects of 2009 Award from The Daily Reporter and Wisconsin Builder
BROOKFIELD, WIS. – The reconstruction of CTH Y (Racine Avenue) in the City of New Berlin, Waukesha County, Wis. is the recipient of a Top Projects of 2009 award from “The Daily Reporter” and “Wisconsin Builder.” R.A. Smith National – civil engineering, planning, surveying, landscape architecture, geographic information systems (GIS) and 3D visualization consultants — Brookfield, Wis., provided construction management services to Waukesha County for the project’s reconstruction. Among others, the CTH Y project was recognized at an awards ceremony on Wednesday, April 21, at Country Springs Hotel, Pewaukee.
The $5.7-million reconstruction of CTH Y included the reconstruction of 1.2 miles from a two-lane rural to a four-lane urban roadway and the reconstruction of 0.4 miles of CTH ES. CTH Y was once a narrow, two-lane roadway struggling to handle the approximate 25,000 vehicles that travel this roadway every day. A hill at the intersection of CTH Y and CTH ES created very unsafe travel conditions. As part of the construction project, the hill was graded to create a much safer roadway and CTH Y was dropped 27feet. A 225-foot bridge was built on CTH ES over CTH Y.
The reconstruction project faced a number of additional challenges including the removal of contaminated soils, extensive use of fly ash stabilization which saved approximately $350,000; major traffic control and construction sequencing to accommodate the adjacent reconstruction of I-43 and CTH Y bridge; and others. The reconstruction of CTH Y was completed in August 2009, two months ahead of schedule.
