Young Scholars of Western Pennsylvania Charter School- Baldwin Township, Pennsylvania
The Young Scholars of Western Pennsylvania Charter School (YSWPC) in Baldwin Township is expanding with a two-story addition that will include classrooms, restrooms and a multi-purpose area. The addition was designed to be built into the side of a hill where each of the two levels can walk out unto grade. R.A. Smith National provided civil engineering and structural engineering.
One of the more interesting aspects of the project is the unique combination of building materials selected during the structural design. Precast planks were chosen over steel for the structural floor of this project because of their shallower structural depth and ability to provide more robust floors (translating to less sound transmission and the ability to carry loads in a more bi-directional fashion). This is a very atypical situation in Pittsburgh where everything is steel, steel and more steel. The use of precast planks is so unusual in Pittsburgh that there is a sole provider of this material locally, with the next closest provider about 300 miles away! Even though the project team had to work within some limitations associated with the materials, keeping the design within the means of the local provider was important to the project.
