Pleasant Prairie Park and Ride - Village of Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin
R.A Smith National provided design and construction administration and observation services for the publicly bid parking lot construction, as well as for the Village-constructed prefabricated pedestrian bridge and precast roadway bridge. The Village had a vision to create not only a needed park and ride lot but also provide overflow parking for the RecPlex, which is the largest municipally owned recreation facility in the U.S. R.A. Smith National developed a design that expanded the RecPlex campus by providing functional and visual connections with the new parking lot.
The primary design challenge was maximizing use of the available upland and making visual as well as vehicle and pedestrian connections across an overgrown creek corridor while minimizing the wetland and floodplain impacts. Components of the project include 388 parking spaces, pedestrian path with a prefabricated bridge over the creek and wetland, access driveway with precast bridge, storm sewer, and a wet detention pond. The project was conducted through the WisDOT as a non-traditional project receiving federal Congestion, Mitigation and Air Quality funding.
