Project Overview
This $12 million, 14-mile rural design project consisted of a cold-in-place (CIR) resurfacing project from I-41 to WIS 54 between Kaukauna and Seymour. It also included the reconstruction of the WIS 55 and County JJ intersection to a modern, single-lane roundabout. raSmith provided transportation and work zone traffic engineering along with surveying services for this roadway project.
The CIR portion of the project included culvert pipe replacements, widened shoulders with rumble strips, and beam guard replacement. Custom construction details were developed to accommodate the two-inch rise in the roadway profile throughout the CIR sections of the project. Within the Town of Freedom, sidewalk and curb ramps were replaced and storm sewer repairs were completed.
With injury accidents comprising a significant number of the crashes at this location, safety was one of the key factors for the reconstruction of the WIS 55/County JJ intersection. The raSmith team was also tasked with designing the new roundabout to minimize impacts to a Town park, supper club/banquet hall, and private stormwater pond surrounding the intersection. Finally, the new, single-lane roundabout accommodates oversized, overweight (OSOW) trucks traveling through the intersection.
