Project Overview
The County Q and Hillside Road intersection had a significant crash history. High speeds and the skew angle of the existing two-way, stop-control intersection contributed to drivers from Hillside Road misjudging gaps in the County Q traffic. This resulted in Highway Safety Improvement Program funding for improvements.
raSmith provided transportation engineering, traffic engineering, survey, and plat services for this project. A single-lane roundabout was selected as the preferred alternative to address the safety issues. Due to a home located near one corner of the intersection, the roundabout needed to be shifted away from the center of the intersection. raSmith designers also introduced a slight elliptical shape to the roundabout to further limit real estate impacts and the need for costly realignment of the approaches, while still meeting design standards.
