Project Overview
This $16.1 million reconstruction project included improvements to a 1.4-mile stretch of Moorland Road (County O) — a four-lane principal arterial in the City of New Berlin. raSmith provided transportation engineering, traffic engineering, and surveying services for this project.
Improvements to Moorland Road included replacing deteriorated concrete pavement from just north of the Beloit Road (County I) intersection to just north of the National Avenue (County ES) intersection. The median was narrowed to allow for a wider outside shoulder and provide a bicycle accommodation without moving the outside curb lines. Right-turn lanes were widened at the intersection to provide additional space for bicycles.
Geometric improvements were made at the signalized intersections of Moorland Road with the Target/Froedtert driveways, Mayflower Avenue, Howard Avenue, and National Avenue to improve operations and safety. The traffic signals were also upgraded at these intersections with added signal heads over each through travel lane and turn lane. Sidewalk curb ramps were updated to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards.
The project’s construction was staged to maximize efficiency. The I-43/Moorland Road interchange is located just south of the project limits, so traffic analysis was required to verify that delays due to lane closures and shifts during construction would not cause significant queuing into the interchange.
