Project Overview
The Ray & Joan Kroc Community Center in Green Bay, Wisconsin was designed to reflect its mission of providing facilities, programs and services that encourage positive life-changing experiences for children and adults. Architect Berners-Schober turned to raSmith’s structural engineers based on our ability to analyze a range of solutions and select the one that was the most cost-effective yet structurally sound for a multiple-use aquatic/recreational facility.
The Ray & Joan Kroc Community Center project is distinguished by an exceptional emphasis on sustainable design components. The entire project site was designed to minimize any adverse environmental impact. Located within a flood plain with high-ground water levels, the building’s foundation was designed to minimize water pooling and facilitate draining to bioswales. A combination of precast beams and columns and recycled steel framing was utilized to achieve the required fire ratings. To avoid the deterioration that chlorine can cause to steel framing, precast beams and columns were chosen for the aquatic center. In order to minimize bouncing from runners circling the suspended running track, a precast framing system was designed to support the structural mass of the track and the adjacent pool area.
