Project Overview
Old underground utilities, including a 120-year-old water main, and roadway needed replacing, which prompted the City of Wauwatosa to make a plan. That plan expanded to the entire Village of Wauwatosa, a downtown urban center full of historic architecture and European character.
The raSmith team joined the project already in progress and faced tight deadlines and a need to ramp up quickly. Our in-house team of multi-disciplined engineers and other professionals collaborated in order to efficiently meet the City’s needs and get the work done. Also important during construction was to keep businesses and roads open as much as possible. Our team worked hand-in-hand with the City to ensure that happened. Stormwater and grading required careful flood consideration due to the proximity to the river.
The Village has gone from a mostly transportation corridor to a mixed-use area for vehicles, bikes, pedestrians and public transit. Travel is safer thanks to user-friendly bike routes and lanes, ADA compliance and better signage. The flush plaza design even allowed for the roadway to be expanded. All the streetscaping and aesthetic improvements make for a unique, welcoming destination to gather, dine and shop.
