Project Overview
Weber Holdings saw an opportunity to create a luxurious destination in downtown La Crosse, Wisconsin by converting a former candy factory to a seven-story boutique hotel with views of the Mississippi River. Built in 1842, the site is of historical significance as it is located at the first trading post settlement in the region.
The Kubala Washatko Architects (TKWA) engaged the site planning and landscape architecture team of raSmith. The client and architect also worked with raSmith for structural design, which included the challenge of adding a concealed seventh story addition to the historic structure. The rooftop was designed to include vibrant garden areas, an outdoor pizza oven and a bar, all with breathtaking views of the Mississippi River, downtown La Crosse and Riverside Park.
The site area was limited on space around the hotel’s perimeter. Pedestrian circulation around a seasonal outdoor dining area as well as a valet/drop off area and a paver “entry rug” were designed using 300-year-old pavers and curbing from Belgium, adding to the historic charm of an already unique destination.
