Paradise Drive Traffic Signal Timing

With major new development along a one-mile corridor with eight signalized intersections, the City of West Bend, Wis., needed to update the signal timing for changing traffic characteristics.

Using Miovision camera technology raSmith collected peak-hour traffic information including vehicle classifications and lane use between 18th Avenue and Main Street. The data were analyzed to develop updated traffic signal timing plans for the weekday morning and weekday evening peak hours to minimize delay. Effectiveness of the existing and proposed timing plans was compared through a progression analysis. An unconventional solution to improve optimization of the signals’ timing along the corridor was to remove the left-turn arrows.
