Project Overview
The City of Brookfield didn’t know the best solution for replacing nine 48-inch corrugated metal pipes at an existing road crossing. The 100-year flood stage was up to one foot above the existing roadway with limited access during flood events.
Based on a strong reputation for stormwater management, the City confidently turned to raSmith to evaluate the options and make a recommendation. Our civil engineers have considered alternative designs in similar situations and recognize the pros and cons of each option.
After listening to and incorporating the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources’ suggestions in the design, the end result was a design that was practical, permittable and cost-effective. The final design consisted of a 6-foot by 12-foot precast concrete box culvert aligned with the stream and a 4-foot by 12-foot precast concrete box culvert for overflow in the left bank, the latter of which also improved aquatic organism passage. The City of Brookfield is pleased with the final design as it was significantly less costly than what they had anticipated. Today there is less flooding over the roadway and improved emergency vehicle access.
