Main Street (WIS 20) Reconstruction

raSmith provided multi-disciplinary design services for Main Street (WIS 20) through the Village of Waterford. The downtown roadway was reconstructed to improve safety, driving characteristics, aesthetics, and sight distances throughout the historic downtown corridor. The project accommodates a future capacity expansion from two to four travel lanes without further widening of the roadway.

Through a series of public stakeholder and committee meetings, Community Sensitive Solutions were selected by the Village and implemented with the road reconstruction. The design team at raSmith worked directly with a community stakeholder group to design a streetscape that included tinted pavement, enhanced crosswalks, decorative lighting, street trees, planters, and other amenities to improve the overall aesthetics of the downtown historic character of the Village of Waterford.

Additionally, raSmith completed a traffic study and conducted a comprehensive pedestrian and bicycle evaluation. The project team collaborated with Village officials and representatives from the four schools located along WIS 20, ultimately recommending Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) near two schools and the public library to increase the safety of their pedestrian crossings. Other pedestrian enhancements such as curb bump-outs, updated sidewalk and multi-use path, ADA-compliant curb ramps, and updated pedestrian signal equipment were installed throughout the corridor.

This project received a 2022 American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) Engineering Excellence State Finalist award and a 2021 WisDOT Excellence in Highway Design award.
