Our clients come to us for creative and effective solutions for their projects. Our work includes both private and public sector projects in land development, transportation/traffic, structural, municipal, and ecological areas. We work on projects nationwide from our seven locations in Wisconsin, Illinois, and California.

We currently have an opening for a student to fill a summer intern position to begin in summer 2025 at our Irvine, CA office. We are looking for students with an interest in gaining practical engineering experience from experienced project managers, engineers and technicians through on-the-job training on real projects. During this time, you will be encouraged to hone your problem-solving abilities and develop technical skills.
Primary Responsibilities
On any given day, our co-op students could be working on the following:
- Pre-development due diligence
- Exhibit preparation
- Permit application
- Site planning
- Civil 3D design tasks including grading or utility design, technical writing, or other tasks to assist the project engineers

- Must have completed the sophomore year of a 4-year Bachelor of Science program in civil engineering at a U.S.-accredited college or university and coursework in civil engineering
- Technical skills to include exposure to AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and Microsoft Office products
- Able to solve basic engineering problems; good decision-making skills
- Skilled at planning by accurately scoping out length and difficulty of tasks and projects
- Excellent communication, detail orientation, interpersonal skills, and team player
- Salary range: $23-$25 per hour

Primary Responsibilities
- Hire and supervise field surveyors
- Manage and schedule surveying and construction staking projects from our site design team
- Provide thorough, professional analyses of survey projects and construction layout including compliance with project scope, requirements, and goals
- Develop and maintain marketing opportunities for new projects as well as procuring estimates
- Prepare contracts and change orders and analysis of legal descriptions and title documents
- Perform survey plan design and drafting using AutoCAD Civil3D to include adherence to raSmith standards and compliance with local laws, codes, and ordinances
- Perform field survey duties including data collection, boundary evidence search and locate, and construction staking (part-time basis), as needed, until additional support staff can be added
- Develop, draft, QC, and stamp survey deliverables including our full variety of mapping services, ALTA/NSPS land title surveys, boundary surveys, TPM, FPM, utility easements, etc.
- Other duties as assigned

- Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering or surveying
- At least 10 years extensive experience in land surveying and construction staking
- California land surveyors license or licensed in other state with the ability to acquire CA license within 6 months
- Knowledge of California survey laws and methodology
- The ability to utilize AutoCAD Civil 3D, Newforma, and the Microsoft Office Suite to assist with all of the survey aspects of civil design files as well as the ability to review and interpret civil design plans
- Applicable U.S.-based work experience

- Completing research and permitting processes for sites

Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from a U.S.-accredited college or university
- E.I.T. certification or professional engineering licensure
- At least 2 to 5 years of experience in design of site-related elements for retail, commercial, industrial, multi-family residential, hospitality, or mixed-use development/redevelopment projects
- Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D, hydrology, and hydraulic software
- Appliable U.S.-based work experience

- Work on a team to assist in site civil design for development or redevelopment projects
- Utilize computer-aided drafting (CAD) techniques in Civil3D to prepare detailed civil engineering drawings for site grading, drainage, paving, and utilities (storm drain, domestic and fire water, sanitary sewer) for commercial, industrial, retail, hospitality, mixed-use, and residential developments
- Maintain CAD standards and procedures for the firm and assist other team members
- Contact governing agencies for plan submittal requirements
- Process civil engineering plans with governing agencies for review/approval

Skills and Requirements
- An Associate degree in civil engineering from a U.S.-accredited university or will have completed a technical program at a technical school
- 1 year of applicable experience
- Proficiency with AutoCAD and Civil3D software is needed
- Experience with Deltek Vision is preferred
- Applicable U.S.-based work experience
