Project Overview
raSmith provided structural engineering services for the expansion of Rehrig’s manufacturing facility. Rehrig required an addition to house new injection molding equipment for large plastic pieces. This addition measures 252 feet by 190 feet and was constructed directly adjacent to the existing facility. Two expansive 73-foot bays were created within the new structure, each equipped with a 40-ton overhead crane to service the 60-foot-long injection molding machines.
The foundations for these machines were carefully designed to support the 1,300-ton and 2,300-ton injection molding equipment, requiring specialized pads of 20 inches and 30 inches thick, respectively. Extensive planning with Rehrig ensured that the foundations met precise dimensional and functional requirements, laying the groundwork for two initial equipment pads and providing accommodations for six additional pads in future phases.
The addition was significantly taller than the original facility, which necessitated reinforcing the existing roof to account for drifting snow loads that could accumulate due to the adjacent structure. Additionally, the existing roof was reinforced to support four cooling towers strategically placed to handle snow load considerations and to avoid disrupting ongoing operations within the existing facility.
