Project Overview
With a tower feature resembling a medieval fortress, this building has a unique history in Milwaukee’s Brewers Hill neighborhood. Built in 1892, the building was originally occupied by the F. Mayer Boot & Shoe Company, one of the largest tanning producers in the world at the time. Since the business closed in 1934, numerous other companies have occupied the space, leading up to a $55 million redevelopment in 2018. raSmith provided site design, civil engineering, surveying and landscape architectural services to help successfully transform the structure into the Fortress — a 132-apartment facility for residential and commercial tenants. The traditional site design complements the historic character, featuring a beautiful outdoor garden area and an ADA-compliant courtyard with raised planters, a grilling area, numerous seating areas and a dog run.
This project received a 2020 Real Estate Award from the Milwaukee Business Journal and a 2020 Mayor’s Design Award from the City of Milwaukee.
