Project Overview
The Outlets at Orange (formerly and still commonly known as The Block at Orange) is one of Orange County, California’s only outlet shopping centers. Simon Property Group selected raSmith to provide civil engineering (roundabout, public intersection and parking), surveying and irrigation design for this open-air shopping mall located a few miles southeast of Disneyland.
A unique rainwater harvesting and irrigation system was designed for the Nordstrom Rack expansion. The irrigation system is a first-of-its-kind in Orange. raSmith designed a system of rain gardens, bioinfiltration fields and rainwater harvesting to collect parking lot runoff and re‑use and repurpose the rainwater for irrigation. The biofiltration area serves as a stormwater retention system and addresses water quality regulations.
raSmith was successful in proving to the municipality that the underground water storage that is part of the rainwater harvesting system will not cause contamination. As trusted advisors, raSmith provided the necessary programming of pumps and filter systems to reuse the rainwater in a specified period of time. Today the new irrigation system harvests hundreds of thousands of gallons of rainwater annually, conserving precious municipal water supplies and avoiding more costly irrigation methods.
