Project Overview
raSmith completed a WisDOT HSIP project to reconstruct traffic signals at three intersections along the W. Lincoln Avenue corridor. raSmith previously completed a citywide safety study and determined the project intersections of S. 84th Street, S. 76th Street, and S. 71st Street were among the top 20 “most dangerous” intersections in the City. Rear-end and angle crashes were prevalent, largely due to the lack of dedicated left-turn lanes on W. Lincoln Avenue and poor sight distance.
The design added exclusive eastbound and westbound left-turn lanes to mitigate these types of crashes. Upgraded curb ramps to meet ADA requirements and a pavement mill and overlay were included at each of the project intersections. Traffic signal designs include monotube traffic signal arms with traffic signal heads over each travel lane, flashing yellow arrows, and video camera vehicle detection. The project’s traffic control plans included temporary traffic signals to maintain traffic during construction.
