Project Overview
Operational issues prompted the construction of a single-lane roundabout at the intersection of WIS 32 and Happy Lane in Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin. Four-way stop and signal alternatives were also investigated, but a single-lane roundabout was found to provide superior operational and safety benefits with lower construction and real estate costs. The project included construction of on- and off-road bicycle accommodations, with multi-use paths in each corner of the roundabout, as well as a trail along the west side of WIS 32.
raSmith met with business owners with driveways near the roundabout entrances and exits. The design was modified to provide access necessary for the success of the businesses without compromising safety for the roundabout. A side road near one of the roundabout exits became a cul-de-sac in order to promote use of the much safer roundabout intersection.
