Project Overview
raSmith performed a Road Safety Audit followed by preliminary and final plan production for a single-lane roundabout at the WIS 33 / County I intersection. The intersection experienced several severe crashes in recent years, including three motorcycle fatalities between 2016 and 2019. raSmith led a Road Safety Audit (RSA) to identify potential safety improvement measures for the intersection. The RSA is an independent multidisciplinary evaluation for the intersection. The Audit included a review of the intersection with representatives from WisDOT, Ozaukee County Sheriff’s and Public Works Departments, the Village and Town of Saukville, the 60th Assembly District State Representative, and motorcyclists. These stakeholders discussed issues witnessed at the intersection during an evening peak traffic period and at night.
A single-lane roundabout was identified as the preferred alternative, and raSmith was retained to complete the roundabout design and associated environmental documentation, utility coordination, right-of-way plat, and PS&E preparation. Due to the severe nature of crashes at the intersection, the design process was accelerated to ensure the roundabout could be constructed as soon as possible. Because WIS 33 is on the state oversize / overweight (OSOW) truck route, the roundabout was designed to accommodate the WisDOT library of single- and multi-trip permit OSOW vehicles.
The project area included numerous design constraints including endangered species habitat, wetlands, navigable waterways, Section 4(f) resources, and a potentially historic property. raSmith was able to minimize or eliminate impacts to these important resources to keep the important safety project on schedule.
