Project Overview
WIS 42 is an important commercial and tourist route for Door County. The roadway’s pavement was deteriorating and required attention. raSmith was engaged by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s (WisDOT) Northeast Region to extend the life of the existing pavement and improve the pavement riding characteristics of this 9.7-mile corridor.
Improvements included milling two inches of existing asphalt pavement, overlaying with two inches of hot-mix asphalt, and reshaping the shoulders. raSmith also inspected the WIS 42 culverts and completed a detailed and extensive review of the existing roadway as compared to current design standards. Design elements outside of standards were documented and incorporated into a Safety Screening Analysis along with a comprehensive Roadside Hazard Analysis, which identified over 520 hazards.
At WisDOT’s request, the raSmith design team shortened the time to completion of the Final Plans, Specifications and Estimates (PS&E), reducing the overall project schedule by nine months.
The following deliverables were prepared: Type 2 Transportation Management Plan, CEC (Environmental Document), Roadside Hazard Analysis, Abbreviated DSR, and Preliminary and Final PS&E Packages.
