Project Overview
raSmith completed the preliminary and final design of a roundabout at the WIS 142/McCanna Parkway intersection in Burlington, Wisconsin. Prior to this roundabout design project, WIS 142 passed over McCanna Parkway and the White River State Trail, which runs along a former railroad corridor. Intersection design alternatives were developed to consider stop, signal, and roundabout control for this new intersection, as well as at-grade and underpass options for the White River State Trail. To support public involvement efforts, 3D renderings were developed for these alternatives.
A single-lane roundabout was selected as the preferred alternative. raSmith prepared the preliminary and final roundabout plans, which were integrated into the plans for a larger rehabilitation project designed by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation Southeast Region. The roundabout has high-speed approaches on two of the three legs and its design incorporates trails and sidewalks.
Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) were installed to enhance bicyclist and pedestrian safety where the White River State Trail crosses a leg of the roundabout. The new roundabout improves connectivity between WIS 142, the White River State Trail, Bushnell Park, Burlington High School, and Gateway Technical College.
